Big Week for Sony (MGS4, New PS3 Bundle, Haze Dated, & PSP bundle)

So this week has seen some pretty significant announcements from Sony.

1.)First and foremost, the release date of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has been confirmed for June 12, 2008.

2.) In related news, Sony also announced that the 80 GB PS3 is in fact, still alive and kicking but will be re-released in a new, clean MGS4 bundle pack. This is actually the first awesome bundle pack I have seen in a long time. If anyone was wondering when PS3 sales will finally start to pick up, this is more than likely your answer. We will discuss this on our next show as well.

3.) Haze seems to finally have a firm release window of May 2008. They didn't announce an actual date which is probably just in case they need a little bit of wiggle room at the last second.

4.) Sony also unveiled a new limited edition red PSP that will be bundled with God of War: Chains of Olympus. Looks cool but I personally think that the PSP is not a system that is meant to be produced in bright colors like red. It is still nice to see that the PSP is making a fierce comeback after years of mediocre performance.

Bourne Conspiracy Update + New Dev. Interview

Hey everyone, this is another Bourne Conspiracy update. With the news that Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass just signed on to produce a fourth Bourne movie, I was ecstatic to see that ign has posted the first Hands-on impressions of the game. So in celebration, I thought I would go ahead and post a new developer interview and talk briefly about the initail impressions. First of all, I know this is a licenced game and I know it is bound to have some flaws but we all know that the concept can be executed well (a la Riddick). The team at ign were allowed to play through a demo that will be available in may (which I will not be playing)and for the most part were impressed. They had a few problems but that is to be expected. Their main complaints were that while the hand to hand combat is crazy and fun, the enemies seem to block a little to often. Also, the newly announced driving sequences didn't seem quite as fast paced as the movies. However, they did estimate that they will increase in intensity as the game progresses. Also, Sierra revealed that a few key characters will be playing a role in the game such as Conklin and love interest, Marie. This is a question I have had for a long time and am glad to see that they will be included. In fact, while Marie's role remained the same in both the book and movie, Conklin's role differed. In the movie, Conklin played Bourne's adversary while in the book he actually played a friend. Strangely enough, High Moon Studios chose to side with the book on this one which really adds to the idea that the game will combine aspects of both mediums. Overall, I am still very excited about this game and can't wait for June. I will keep everyone posted for sure but in the mean time, go ahead and check out this brief interview.

Cover Art #069 - PSP Playlist

Here's the one less than 70 cover art comparison. It's for three different PSP games.

1. One that I can't waiting for.
2. One that looks interesting.
3. One that I'm not sure about.

I guess the PSP's not dead after all.

Show # 51 - The Hosted Show

This week, I officially host 4player podcast. This will become an alternating, weekly event. We broadcasted live as usual and began with our impressions of what we've been playing. The big center of discussion was around this years GDC (Game Developers Conference) which led to some big topics such as Fable 2 Co-Op, Far Cry 2 Tech Demo and Realism, as well as Gears of War 2. We closed with a brief discussion about the importance of backwards compatibility and what we are looking forward to. Once again, we appreciate all of ya'll who have been watching or listening to the show as well as those who hung around and interacted with us while we did our first official game "run through". If you missed it, be sure to check our archive at JTV. Tune in next week for show 52 and the finale of our 3-episode run through of Condemned: Criminal Origins!

Independent Games Spotlight #1

I was planning on doing this weeks ago but I got kinda worried about building a comprehensive list. The list kept building so I decided to do a weekly feature. Now that the Independent Games Festival is going on I got all excited about it again. These games are more important than ever for us because although many start on the PC, a large portion of these games will end up on PSN or Xbox Live nowadays. Here are is a game to start things off:

Crayon Physics Deluxe

I was planning on posting about this game two weeks ago and even mentioned it the other day after the show... I played the much more dumbed down beta version of this game and it was still absolutely amazing. You can download and play it here. Here is the video of the full version:

There is a ton of indie games I've been following recently, so I might post more later this weekend, but expect this to be more of a weekly thing.

Far Cry 2 Tech Demo

So David was showing some skepticism when I mentioned Far Cry 2 looking as impressive as Crysis was on the last show. I have been looking for some kind of video to post that embodies my excitement for the game and I think I have found it. So this is tech demo from www.gametrailers.com. The demo is kinda boring in terms of action but it show cases the beauty of the game and the amazing effects being generated in real time by the engine. I'll keep everyone updated as the game draws closer to launch.

This is one of those games that I think will really need to take advantage of the PS3's processing capabilities in order to be on par with it's PC version. Sorry Microsoft but this game probably won't look as polished on your console. We will have to wait and see.

Later,
Nick

Brad's Clean-Up List (Week 1)

I was going to start this last fall but, to be honest, the end of last year was crazy as hell for new games. While we are not exactly in gaming slump, I definitely want to work in some of my older collection. Being a tidy video game player is important to me... as it helps keep me from getting overwhelmed.

Week 1

Shadow of the Colossus - beaten
Devil May Cry 4 - beaten

Yeah, I have a lot of unbeaten games. Much more than I will ever get to probably, but here is a list of games I actually plan to beat in coming months. These games I've played quite a bit of already and just want to finish them up. I'll try to list my percentages.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - 75%
Final Fantasy V - 80%
Rez HD - 99%?
PixelJunk Monsters coop - 50%?
Advance Wars 4 - 75%
Professor Layton and the Curious Village - 65%?
Phoenix Wright 1 - 95%
Rock Band on hard - 90%
Tomb Raider Anniversery - 65%
Kingdom Hearts 2 - 85%
Suikoden 5 - 50%
Tales of the Abyss - 85%
Casltevania: Curse of Darkness - 70%
Xenosaga 3 - 85%
Jeanne D'Arc - 50%

Some of the longer projects:
Odin Sphere - 20%?
Persona 3 - 15%
Grandia 3 - 10%
Phantasy Star IV - 5%
and
Oblivion - OMG 1%-15%?

I'll keep everyone updated.

4player Podcast now in Itunes Podcast Directory

It's been nearly a week since I submitted our show for the directory, but I guess we finally got cleared. You can now search the Itunes directory for our show and subscribe there to get every show automatically. We are located in the directory under Games and Hobbies->Video Games.

If you are a fan, please leave us a write up in the review section. It goes a long way in helping us get noticed there.

On a side note to Nick: Our info on Itunes is taken directly from our MyPodcast host site. So we can't make any changes to our name (the show is hyphenated on there), profile, podcast picture, etc... unless we do it on the site that hosts the podcasts. Since you created the account there, you need to log in to make those changes. Let me know if you have any questions.

Fable 2 Video Update

Hey I just watched this video that demonstrates the new co-op feature in the upcoming Fable 2 for Xbox360. I think that this game has the potential to live up to a lot of the original's promise. This video not only demonstrates the games cool co-op feature but also shows just how beautiful this game is going to be visually. It's quite amazing to think that you can have a friend bring his/her hero into your world as a kind of secondary character and actually affect your universe permanently. Example: In the demo, the co-op character actually kills the main character's husband. The husband will remain dead even after the friend has left the world. It is really quite remarkable. So here is the video, let me know what you think.

Nick's Laundry List

So Brad proposed that each of us compile a few games that we wish to revisit and finish this year. After going over my collection, I have picked a few games that I intend to finish up. I'll keep you updated as I finish them.

- Condemned (we will be finishing this together sometime before March 12, probably live cast it too)
- Suffering 2: Ties that Bind
- Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
- Fatal Frame 3
- FEAR
- Zone of Enders 2
- Elder Scrolls Oblivion

Peace!

Nick's Industry Spotlight # 2 (2/20/2008)

So i'm a little sick but the show must go on. Here is what has caught my eye in the industry lately.

1.) Today, Microsoft announced Gears of War 2 exclusively for the Xbox360. The game is slated for a November 2008 release which is probably gonna kick into high gear so they can have it out in time to compete with Resistance 2 for the PS3. Below is the teaser trailer:

2.) Got my hands on the March issue of Game Informer magazine and was actually quite impressed with the article on Aliens: Colonial Marines. The game looks very polished for an early build and will hopefully capture the same feel as the movies. This is a franchise that I have been waiting to be revitalized since Alien Ressurection. I won't go into much detail now being that it is still very far off (early 2009) but I just wanted to mention it.

3.) Same issue of GI introduced the new Red Faction, titled Red Faction: Guerilla. It may just be me but the game looks terrible for a next gen shooter. I'm sure it will start to look up but I personally think, it was way to early for THQ to be showing that particular game. We will see though.

4.) A bunch of Too Human gameplay videos have hit the web and actual look pretty impressive. I wasn't very excited about this game until now. The game seems very focused on "devil may cry" or "god of war" style action which seems pretty cool. Ill keep everyone updated.

Thats it for now, i'm off to finish Turok today and hopefully get a bit further in No More Heroes.

Peace!

Podcast #050 - The 50th Show?

So I can't believe it we've been doing this for over a year now and we've done 50 of these things. It's a great accomplishment and to celebrate, we just did a regular normal show.

This week we've got Granger back as he talks about Lost Oddssey and DMC4. Nick goes into his Turok experiences. Brad has been playing up a storm as he went back and revisited Shadow of the Colossus and Earth Defense Force. I talk a little about NiGHTs which leads to a discussion about how the Wii effects companies like Sega. There are some more good discussion topics on the show, so please listen.

Its Been Awhile... Let's Rock Baby!

Sorry about my lack of updates, when I wasn't busy with school, I have been totally consumed in Devil May Cry 4.  After a good 10 or so hours, I finished the game and I loved it.  The game stands tall next to its predecessors.  The final fight was a bitch and to add insult to injury, I had to beat him twice because I accidentally failed at protecting Kyrie while the credits rolled which gets you another cutscene.   With me being the cutscene freak, I had to see it so I went through and beat it one more time which actually turned out to be a blast.  Sorry guys, but I really liked the new main character and hope that he returns for the next sequel.  I will be working hard on my full review over the next week or so.  Keep an eye out.

After finishing DMC4, I popped in the animated series and watched 2 episodes.  I will say that I liked it but it seriously lacks that look and feel that computer animated graphics give the franchise.  It is cool to see Dante portrayed in another form, not to mention Lady but otherwise, I can't see myself buying any more episodes.

I also immediately jumped into Turok and so far I like it but I won't know exactly how I feel until I get a bit farther.

Thats it for now!

An Official Change

David always seemed concerned about making a 'Top 10 Favorite Games of All Time' list because he didn't want to be tied down to any choices he made. I assured him that if the time came and he needed to make changes to his list, no one would mind.

I hope I was right because I'm making an official amendment to my Top 10 list. After popping in the Orange Box the other day and re-playing its various games for a bit I came to a realization just how great a game and just how much I love the Half Life 2 series.

I've previously considered the games separate, but it really is one complete story. The story is not yet finished but I am confident in the games in their current form even though incomplete. The games simply have some of the best story, characters, and game mechanics I have ever seen in a video game. Half Life 2 was always ahead of its time on PC and as a console series it is a part of the current generation.

So... I'm bumping Resident Evil 4 off my top 10 list and giving its spot to Half Life 2 and the Episodes. My Top 10 now looks like this:

1. Final Fantasy Tactics
2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
3. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
4. Tekken Tag Tournament
5. Metal Gear Solid
6. Final Fantasy VI
7. Super Mario World
8. Diablo 2
9. Half Life 2 and Episodes
10. Advance Wars

It didn't make my list last year because I hadn't played Episodes 1 and 2 yet. Episode 2 might have been my number 1 game of last year but it was edged out by Portal. As a complete package though... HL2 made it in to my top 10.

And I won't be surprised if Half Life 2: Episode 3 bumps this game into my top 3. I love you Valve.. but hurry your ass up.

-Brad

10 February 2008

Holy Hell

Seems every time I think about posting, I am 100 posts behind.

Picked up Devil May Cry today. Caught my attention for a little while. There are no obvious flaws in the game, other than you only use one button to do combos, but it feels like something is missing.
I don't know if it is just that the game isn't fluid, and that might just be because I have been playing Ninja Gaiden lately, or if the story isn't real (as an actual one) enough for me.
The gameplay is fun, I thoroughly enjoy the fighting system, Most of the time you feel like a complete bad ass, that last 15% you feel like a god.
I have only finished the first two missions, and have decided that my favorite part of the game is the boss battles. They could easily be the most annoying battles in the world (and i am comparing to ninja gaiden) but that little grabber you get makes the battle.
I'll talk about it more if I get invited to another show.

I'll be picking up Lost Oddesey Wednesday, which is great, I haven't heard much about this game. But I have been dying for a good eastern RPG for the 360. Both fingers crossed on this one.

So I have bought all 3 next-gen systems now.... and the game that is taking up most of my time nowadays is the infamous Gunbound by Softnyx.
I am addicted yet again.
I would love if (assuming there are any) some fans would want to download the game, free by the way, and just play for awhile. This game is a lot like Worms but... different. You have an avatar which is very plain when you start off. this avatar has a choice of "riding" 16 different bots (which includes two random ones). All these bots are different types, such as Machine or Creature. All these creatures also have different powers, and 3 powers divided among them. shot 1, shot 2 and SS, or supershot. You can kill an enemy two different ways, taking out all their HP, or by bunging them which is the term for destroying the land beneath an enemy and them falling to their death.
Fighting is done by measuring how much power you should use in your shot and what angle you should shoot it off. Making the game a game of guesstimating where you are going to land. If you play long enough though, you tend to get a feel of where your shot is going to land pretty quickly.
Great game which is ridiculously addictive for such a simple game.

HOpe to be able to be on the show soon! Yall have a good night.
Looking forward to live podcasting!!!

Here is Where I Begin

So it's official. I've purchased my first Playstation 3 game. Previously I received a couple as presents and I downloaded a few of the original titles online. I picked up Devil May Cry today and am thoroughly enjoying it. I like the precision involved with pulling of certain combinations and with Nero's grappling hand its fun to combo a guy knock him away then pull someone else in all while in mid air. I'm glad this was the DMC game I first started playing. I never spend too much time with the first one but I think with all the refinements made in the series, it's not worth it to go all the way back.

On a side note my left thumb is really sensitive right now. It's slightly in pain from all the rubbing against the thumbsticks. I've been hard at work finishing off No More Heroes which made it take a lot of abuse and now add on DMC4.

In a bit of a surprise, Brad and I have been playing a bit of Pixel Junk Monsters from the PSN. It's not the most original concept, but being able to play it Co-Op, makes it absolutely fun filled. I can't wait until Brad is ready to play some more.

Check back for my review of No More Heroes,
David

Brad's Weekly TV Guide

Ok, not just TV... but whatever, it's what I've been watching.

TV:
The Wire Season 5 - This is easily the greatest show on television right now and sadly it will be ending at the end of this season. I've seen 7 episodes so far (3 left) and things are getting crazy. People are dead... and I have a feeling more are gonna die. The newsroom storyline this season is definitely interesting and some of the laughs involving McNulty's crazy plan have been great.

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 6(?) - My roommate owns this and I started watching it the other day. I seriously forgot how funny this show was. Funny stuff... Go rent season 1 since I know most of you haven't even seen an episode.

Anime:
Samurai Champloo - Finished this up last week. Absolutely awesome. I love the style and music of this anime. It just works. The characters are great and the show has a tight story progression much like Shinichiro Wantanabe's other series, and my personal fave, Cowboy Bebop.

Full Metal Panic Fumoffu - This anime takes the funny Chidori/Sagara moments from the main series and removes the rest of the serious storyline. The show has some of the funniest moments I've ever seen in any anime period. The show is only 13 episodes, but the episodes are split up into two different mini-episodes. Kind of like Arthur on PBS or something. My god, I nearly die of laughter every time Sagara gets into that damn Fumoffu suit. I'm a little over half way done with the series.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi - Recently finished and absolutely genius. This show doesn't need another season, but the second is coming soon.

Movies:
Once - An Irish movie about two people and their music. A simple story, but very romantic and mature. The music in the movie was great, and these two actors not only started dating after they shot the movie, but they also tour together as their musical act from the movie. Check it out if you like music or a good romantic movie.

The Namesake, The Lives of Others, The King of Kong(again) - Will watch later this week.

There Will Be Blood - In theaters and I will see it soon. Daniel Day Lewis is to acting as Miyamoto is to game design. My god I can't wait to see this.

-Brad

The Time Has Come (w00000t!!!)

Red Faction 3 has finally been announced! And being developed once again by Volition.

One of the most underrated (and sadly underplayed) games on the Playstation 2 was Red Faction. It had very much a Half Life feel in terms of story integration and the game had a really cool setting on Mars. It was all about revolution and stuff... pretty awesome.

Maybe its biggest flaw was that it was an early console dual stick FPS. And pretty much every console FPS prior to Halo controlled like crap. But once you got used to it, it wasn't so bad.

The reason this game was so fucking awesome was the GeoMod technology it used. Not only could you blow up most surfaces, but you could actually carve paths through walls and such with the rocket launcher. The game encouraged this as the ammo for the rocket launcher was never scarce. This led to some really cool moments in the single player but really shined in multi player matches. Yeah... split screen multi player.

I hate split screen but loved playing this game with people. The GeoMod was unbelievable in a competitive environment. The canyon map with the two bases is still one of the best multi player maps I have ever played. You may have a huge base, but you never really felt safe. One minute you could be sitting pretty waiting for your rail gun to respawn inside your base and the next you could have a rocket up your ass as your opponent has blown all your walls to smithereens. In games like Call of Duty you see rubble buildings all torn to bits in its multi player maps, but in this game you make them that way. Although the best part of the map was carving out your own tunnels in the canyon walls to get from one base to another.

Seeing an updated version of this feature in today's competitive multi player environment would be insane. InSaNe!!! Let's just hope the developers return to form here, because the second game in the series wasn't all that great.

This Week's Minutes

First off, so I guess we're in agreement that we will have Smash Balls turned off? The final smashes look like crap honestly. As Brad said some are way more useful than others, a few of them barely do damage at all (ie. Lucas & Ness, Peach). What's even worse is that some of them are even clones of each other (ie Sonic/Pikachu and The Star Fox Characters and Link/Toon Link). I found it especially funny that some characters even died after using theirs while others almost guaranteed a kill. I guess we should wait until we get playtime with the new smash, but it's looking pretty crappy. Famitsu gave it a perfect score, but I think that has to be out of respect for the series.

Secondly, so it looks like they're bringing Arcana Heart to the states. Apparently Atlus is publishing it. I was in Japan at Super Battle Opera to see the finals for this game. Too bad I imported it for 65 bucks. I'll probably buy this version too for the 30. [Arcana Heart Official Site]

Secondly, I'm all wrapped up in No More Heroes right now. At first I didn't like it too much, but now I'm itching to play it. I love the assassins and all the personalities they have. SUDA-51 and his team always come up with some weird and lovable characters. I hopefully will have it finished by the show tomorrow and will get a review up soon.

I should have some Smash Bros. Brawl impressions up tonight or tomorrow, if not, I'll talk about it on the show.

Four is my lucky number,
David

LOLZ... A Real Sony Fanboy

A pretty cool video as this one is finally helping me understand how the Wii-mote is able to tell distance and angle. For some reason I see Sony jumping on this long before Nintendo does since it requires the eyetoy sitting by the tv and not the wiimote. Honestly... if they sold a game with a pair of IR glasses and a lens cap then it could totally work.

The last comment he made was awesome. Shows what smarts can do in the hands of a fanboy.
